As most of you know by now, I am a big fan of biking. Now, I am not referring to long distance speedy, spandex cycling kind of biking (though that’s great too) but biking for fun and for transportation. That’s why I started exploring real estate with clients by bicycle. Most days you’ll see me around town on my pretty little bicycle, heading to work, doing errands, going for a sunset cruise along the Battery…it’s a wonderful life! So here are a few fun facts, courtesy of Pedal to Properties in Boulder, CO.
- A cyclist’s median income is $62,500 versus $46,000 for the average American.
- Homes near bicycle or walking trails sell faster and at higher prices, according to the National Association of Realtors.
- In fact, Realtors cite trails as the second most important community amenity to buyers.
- Retail bike sales were up 73% in 2008.
This information certainly mimics the trends I have seen here in Charleston. Each year, the number of people on bikes has increased and 2010 looks to be a banner year from a planning and advocacy standpoint. I can’t wait!
