Having a Sunday Funday in Charleston – Nothing Could be Finer

All work and no play makes Kristin a very dull woman.  Thus, this past beautiful, clear, no precipitation in sight Sunday afternoon, my husband and I decided on the spur of the moment that a Charleston Sunday Funday was in order.  So we rang up his brother and girlfriend, found out they were happy to oblige, and we were on our merry way.  So what is an ideal Sunday Funday for us?  One that gives us the best of our spectacular Lowcountry?  Here it is…

4:00-6:00PM – Set up chairs on the Isle of Palms beach with an incoming tide.  Read some magazines.  Have some good conversation.  Enjoy a little surfing, boogie boarding, and general galavanting in the warm water.  Chuckle at the busy sandpipers pecking for their evening meal.  Watch the light change from white to gold to pink.  Feel the breeze and hear the sound of Mamma Ocean.

6:30-8:00PM – Hop on a boat, open a little wine, and take a leisurely ride down the Intracoastal Waterway.  Meander through Morgan Creek, admiring the boats at the Marina and the homes along the water in Wild Dunes.   Emerge into the vastness of Dewees Inlet, surrounded by nothing but water and nature and a purple sky, anchor the boat and jump in.

People, let me tell you, THIS is the Charleston experience.  You cannot fully appreciate life in the Lowcountry until you get a chance to sunset swim in our waterways.  It’s just you, suspended, one with the horizon, encased in pinks and blues and purples in a gentle watery lullaby.  I could do it again and again, and it would never cease to be magic.

So here are a few photos and a map of the boat tour.  Of course they don’t do it justice so perhaps you’ll just have to go see for yourself.

And here’s the map of our route.  Keep in mind that it is best to go around high tide in a smallish boat!
